Therapy with Kids, teens, & Families
Does telehealth work with kids and teens?
Virtual therapy has been found to be helpful for kids and teens, but everyone is different.
What happens at the first appointment?
For children under 12 years old parents or guardians come to the first appointment without your child. This allows us time to discuss things privately to ensure I have a good understanding of your concerns. A follow-up appointment will then be scheduled for me to meet your child to get to know them more.
For teens 13 years and older, parents or guardians and the teens both come to the first appointment. We will spend time all together, as well as teens and parents separately. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend the 1st appointment alone if they prefer.
Regardless of your child’s age, the person who has legal custody MUST be present for the initial appointment or the appointment will be rescheduled. If there is joint custody, both legal guardians must provide consent.
For family therapy, we can discuss what may be best during our consultation call.
What are appointments like?
During appointments we will focus on the goals that were created with you and your child together. This may be through talking, books, art, or games, as children communicate and learn through play.
How involved will I be in my child’s therapy appointments and treatment?
Parent involvement is important. It is my hope that parents will be a part of identifying goals, sharing observations and concerns, and reviewing progress. Confidentiality is really important for developing a good relationship with your child, your child will be in charge of what information is shared with you from our time together. There are some exceptions which we will talk about together.
How do I talk with you about my child’s progress and concerns?
Children must attend appointments with their parent/legal guardian unless we develop a different plan. Guardians are encouraged to share thoughts, concerns, and observations at the beginning or end of each appointment as that time is devoted to you and your child. Calls outside of the scheduled appointment will be charged a fee based on length.
Can we see you for individual and family therapy? Will you see all of my kids individually?
If I am seeing one of your children for family therapy I will not see anyone in the family for individual therapy as well. I typically do not see siblings for individual therapy however this is unique to each family.
Will you make a recommendation or testify in court about custody and visitation?
I do not make recommendations regarding custody, visitation, or other court involvement as this interferes with my role as your child’s therapist and trust. I am happy to write a letter documenting diagnosis, goals, engagement in treatment, and dates of appointments. It is most appropriate for a third party unbiased provider to complete evaluations and make recommendations as needed.
